If you are the first in the right market you may need little advertisement. Sun Microsystems’ workstations were the first on the market with the new UNIX operating system and needed no advertisement. They became the world leaders with their Sun workstations and in the early nineties were voted the fastest growing company on the Fortune 500 list, with a phenomenal 114 per cent compounded annual growth rate.

People never forget firsts. No one has ever forgotten that Charles Lindbergh was the first to fly across the Atlantic. But how many remember that Bert Hinkler was second? Impressive firsts in the consumer market include South Africa’s Kreepy Krauly in pool cleaners, IBM in computers, and Coca Cola in soft drinks.

Paying for advertisements. My experience until now has shown that it is not always worthwhile to advertise a single product by paying for advertisements in magazines and newspapers, especially if the product is not very expensive and the market is small. However, if your business is successful and you have many or expensive products with a large market, it should be worth your money.

You must decide if you are going to advertise, and if you do, do it well. It is said that advertising in small doses result in nothing. When you advertise, remember there is no law saying advertisements should look like advertisements. Studies have shown that you will attract roughly six times more readers if you make the advert look like editorial copy.

It is important to enjoy your journey towards success. I have a system where I reward myself for the smaller achievements on the way to an ultimate goal. As fun things are included in my planning, it makes planning a pleasure, not a duty. For example, when I complete this I’ll take the family away for a weekend at a resort of their choice.

Julie Kruger broke the world record for the largest pancake with a diameter of 12,5 metres in March 1992. It weighed a staggering 25 tons! A concrete mixer transported the dough from Julie’s factory to a Bloemfontein park, where the fire brigade used hoses to pump the mixture into a specially constructed pan. Four large cranes were necessary to flip the pancake over as required by the Guinness Rules.
