The Power to Endure part 4
JOLT — Just-One-Last-Try — because the world is filled with early settlers
Despite everything that we’ve said so far, there is one thing that really separates the great-ones from the also-rans: The great- ones give it Just-One-Last-Try while the also-rans go home. The great- ones know that the very last call is the call that delivers the results. You know why? Because that’s when the competition has given up for theday.
It’s the last try that builds the physical and mental muscle. It’s the last try that impresses the customer. It’s the state of the store or the state of the team at the end of the game that determines ultimate success or failure. It’s not how you start but how you finish the game that counts. Put this point to the test: call on companies between 17h00 and 18h00 during the week. See how they treat you. Go into stores just as they’re closing and sample the results. Be the last to leave a restaurant and witness their treatment of you. Just like we have, you will discover that the champions always give it Just-One-Last-Try.
They finish like professionals.
You see, the world is full of early settlers. These are the people whostop at the first obstacle and give up. They hit the cul-de-sac and go home. They don’t realize that the cul-de-sac isn’t the end of the road, it’s the beginning of another. That’s why this nation’s most precious resource is its entrepreneurs - people like you. These are the intrepid souls who are trailblazing new possibilities. These are the few and the brave who know that paradise is on tie. ar side of pain. But they also know that it takes Just-One-Last-Try to get there.
A final message about persistence: If your purpose is to genuinely help others, your will to persist w ill endurebeyond your competition
If your only goal in becoming an entrepreneur is self-enrichment, we suggest you terminate your quest right now. If your goal is to genuinely help others, your success is almost certainly guaranteed.
Every great business has its roots in the desire to please, gratify and reward others. Every great business has the customer at its centre. Every great business ultimately uplifts the community it serves. Does yours? Because if you do not increase the well being of the people you serve, your business will die. And it will die soon. It’s as simple asthat.
One of the reasons why we approached Deloitte & Touche is that they walk their talk of giving back to the community. Although Deloitte & Touche is a R1bn enterprise, they accept their responsibility to develop business at grassroots level.
Deloitte & Touche have formed a joint venture called Business Beat together with the Small Business Advisory Bureau, Eccles Associates Inc, a U.S. based consulting firm that specialises in small and medium size companies, Eskom and Ntsika. Specifically, the vision of Business Beat is to create vibrant economies within communities by unleashing creative potential and talent, identify opportunities, transfer skills and foster ownership through community participation.”
In 1995, Deloitte & Touche saw that there were relatively few initiatives aimed at helping small and micro entrepreneurs on the ground. So they took action. As Charles Godfrey, Partner in Charge, Business Beat, says, “What began as a local monthly discussion forum has graduated into a fully integrated solution to SME development within our communities throughout South Africa”. The informal business sector, through Business Beat, is getting to grips with key business issues, and is creating opportunities through the formation of joint ventures. We see our role as brokers of talent and resources. By facilitating the training, mentorship, financing and ongoing support of worthy candidates, we want to help the community plant, nurture and harvest the fruit of their economic success.”
It seems to be working according to Vusi Nhlapo, President, Daveyton and Wattville Chamber. Nhlapo says, “By taking time to explain the fundamentals of economic and financial concepts to our members, Deloitte & Touche has helped us to get off the ground. There has been a real transfer of basic skills and understanding.”
So here’s our question to you: what will you do to reinvest in the community that supports you?
