Suggestion selling

Many products sold by network marketing companies make excellent gifts, so be on the lookout for opportunities to suggest the item, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Secretary’s Day, birthdays or Christmas. Every additional item sold increases your take-home pay!

Distribute a newsletter

As your downline grows, it may become increasingly difficult for you to stay in touch with your distributors. For this reason it becomes important to write a monthly newsletter which advises of new developments, new products, reminds your team of forthcoming events and gives recognition to those who have done well. Above all, it enables you to put across your own enthusiasm for network marketing. Keep the newsletter’s copy crisp, punchy and dynamic. Avoid lengthy, chatty newsletters.

The ingredients of a good newsletter

  • Your company name, address and fax number should be prominent at the head of the letter.
  • Stamp your ‘return to sender’ address on the back of the newsletter’s envelope. Use a rubber stamp to save you having to laboriously write out the address by hand.
  • Put a date on each newsletter and send each one out on different-coloured paper to make it stand out.
  • Always start with a positive statement about the growing success of your business, thanking everyone for their participation.
  • Talk about any developments in your business or the company in general.
  • Give product knowledge. This information will help you sell more.
  • Remind people of your sales support materials, such as brochures, policy guides, tapes and videos.
  • Take articles from other newsletters that caught your eye. Acknowledge the source. Do a reciprocal mailing with other networkers. This provides valuable of information.
  • Use quotations, poems and cartoons to keep the newsletter visually interesting.
  • Give recognition, recognition and more recognition — everyone wants to see their name in print!

Advise on forthcoming events, such as promotional meetings, rallies, national conventions, and so forth.

Provide motivational tapes

Motivational tapes can be used to inspire others and yourself. There are dozens of these on the market, some good and some bad.

Hold weekend seminars

Once in a while do something really different. Have a weekend seminar for your top distributors. At the weekend — which should be fun as well as work — discuss strategies to find business, ways of improving your network, sort out any problems and propose recommendations to your supplying company for new products.

Show people you run a successful business

Everyone wants to be part of a success story. If you have a distributor who is doing well in your downline, publicise that fact. Introduce new recruits to him or her. If a new distributor meets a successful distributor he or she can say: ‘Wow! Look at Joe. He has 300 distributors in his down- line.’ The new recruit realises that success is possible.

Successful people can pass on hints and tips that are really valuable to new distributors. Experience is a kind of pollen that rubs off on others. The new distributor does not have to go through the learning curve because someone else has already done this and can pass on the benefit of the experience.
