It’s quite amazing how some people say: ‘I can’t do it.’ Why downgrade your potential? What’s more, as Henry Ford once observed, ‘Whether you believe you can do a thing or believe you can’t, you will prove yourself right.’ We may not have the quote exactly right, but the gist is that we tend to become what we believe we will become. You can achieve practically anything if you have the will to do so. And what is will-power? Simply, building up a great love for accomplishment.

Here are four inspirational stories of people who achieved greatness because they believed in themselves and acted on their beliefs.

Overcome physical disability

Captain Karoly, a lieutenant in the Hungarian Army, won the Olympic title for pistol marksmanship in the 1936 with a perfect score. He fired 100 times and hit 100 bull’s-eyes.

In 1944, when he was leading a guerrilla force in the mountains of Hungary fighting against the Germans, a hand grenade was thrown into his foxhole. He grabbed it and threw it out to protect the lives of the other men in the foxhole. The grenade exploded in the air and severed his right hand at the wrist. For most people this massive handicap would be the end of a career, yet at the Olympic Games in London in 1948 he was again crowned world champion. He hit the bull’s-eye 99 times out of 100 using his left hand.

Soichiro Honda started with nothing but an idea, determination and a firm belief. For most people the idea of building an international business giant in a lifetime would be impossible. Soichiro faced tremendous odds. He started with no development capital. As his business grew, an earthquake flattened his factory. As he rebuilt, Japan became involved in the Second World War with disastrous results. Yet, today, Honda is a company of international stature and a household name.

Achieve the impossible

For years athletes tried to break the four-minute barrier for the mile and failed. Roger Bannister first cracked this barrier in 1954. The remarkable fact is that within two years this seemingly impossible mark was beaten over 300 times!

Develop a wonderful idea

If you were challenged to come up with a winning idea, something new, different or creative, you might say, ‘Who? Me?’ If you were challenged to come up with more than one idea that was totally revolutionary, you’d probably say it would be impossible. Have you heard of the duplicating machine, record player, light bulb and motion pictures? Thomas Edison invented and pioneered all these products. During his lifetime he took out more than 1 400 patents in his name.

And we could point to dozens of other giants who have made major contributions in their lifetime. Writers, artists, musicians, political leaders, religious leaders and explorers. In whatever field you choose, you can achieve success if you think you can!
